Maryland has more than 400 dams, ranging in height from less than six feet to nearly 300 feet. Dam safety in Maryland is the responsibility of the Maryland Department of the Environment. MDE’s Dam Safety Program ensures all dams in Maryland are designed, constructed, operated and maintained safely to prevent dam failures and the consequences of failure.
